The provincial capital, Ferrara , is a modern city with very old traditions.
One of the most attracting things about Ferrara is its excellent state of preservation. This is the result of continual restoration projects, the most recent being that of the massive fortified city wall, but also including numerous buildings whose glory has been restored by transforming them into cultural sites or academic departments within the University of Ferrara, one of Italy's oldest and most prestigious. |
Historical monuments are backed up by the most modern of infrastructures. There are comfortable, full-service hotels located along the routes leading into the city; the fairground is already hosting important international events; meeting rooms exist for every occasion, some extremely modern, others located in the city's great historical buildings.
Famous for its beauty and active cultural life, Ferrara is also known for the high quality-of-life. The absence of traffic in much of the centre, extensive green areas, and a people-oriented environment make it an ideal place to live, work and visit. The quiet city centre is crossed every day by thousands of bicycles, which have long enjoyed the role of uncontested masters of the streets. Ferrara is part of the European circuit "Cities for cyclists", and has the highest percentage of bicycle traffic in Italy. Tourists can get bicycles from various rental points spread around the city, and many hotels have bicycles for the use of their guests, thus enabling them to experience the city in an unusual and enjoyable way. |
